QIAGEN\u2019s new nucleic acid extraction system, QIAmini<\/strong>, is coming to the City-Lab QIAGEN exhibition tour before becoming permanently available for viewing at City-Lab Biomedicum. We asked a few quick questions to QIAGEN Sales Representative Lotta Esselstr\u00f6m<\/strong> and Marketing Manager Laura Liimatainen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First things first: which takes up less bench space, QIAmini or the average researcher\u2019s coffee mug collection?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lotta:<\/strong> Actually, I\u2019d also like to give some visibility to tea mugs! As a former researcher, I can confirm that the tea mugs probably take up more space. Add a collection of tea bags, and the competition is over.<\/p>\n

Laura:<\/strong> I would also say that most coffee mug collections easily win when it comes to bench space requirements.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Lotta Esselstr\u00f6m, as the account manager, what surprised you most when you saw QIAmini for the first time?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lotta:<\/strong> My first thought was: can such a small instrument really do so much? When you see it for the first time, it is hard to believe how much automation and performance have been packed into an instrument of this size. At the same time, it makes laboratory automation more accessible in terms of space, usability, and investment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

QIAGEN is already known as a market leader in nucleic acid extraction. Why does the world need another small extraction instrument?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Laura:<\/strong> Molecular biology tools continue to find new applications, and I believe their importance will only grow in the age of AI. Many industries and organizations that previously had little exposure to molecular biology are now adopting molecular biology workflows. In our view, there is still a clear need for a compact, high-quality extraction platform that is easy enough to use for laboratories just starting their molecular biology journey, while also being a flexible addition for more experienced users.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why are you looking forward to introducing the instrument at City-Lab?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lotta:<\/strong> We are particularly excited because users will be able to see the instrument in action. Many have heard about laboratory automation, but now they can experience it firsthand and evaluate it from the perspective of their own workflows. We are looking forward to discussions about how laboratory work can be simplified, even for low-throughput extraction needs starting from just 1 to 8 samples.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What types of samples can be processed with QIAmini?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Laura:<\/strong> QIAmini already supports the purification of DNA, RNA, or total nucleic acids. A wide range of sample types is supported, including tissue and cell samples, buccal swabs, whole blood, body fluids, and stool samples. With the QIAmini Pathogen Kit, bacterial and viral nucleic acids can also be isolated from a variety of starting materials.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

If QIAmini were a colleague in the laboratory, what kind of coworker would it be?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lotta:<\/strong> QIAmini is not the kind of colleague that constantly seeks attention, but when clean DNA or RNA is needed, it reliably gets the job done. It is also not intimidated by different sample types and can jump into almost any project and adapt quickly. (And unlike some colleagues, it would not send a calendar invitation for a meeting that could have been handled by email.) DNA and RNA extractions would be reproducible, and the jokes would still be flying around the lab.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Being small does not automatically make an instrument special. What makes QIAmini different?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Laura:<\/strong> QIAmini is much more than a small extraction instrument. It combines QIAGEN\u2019s decades of expertise in nucleic acid purification with a cost-effective automation platform. A major advantage for users is the clearly defined portfolio of compatible kits and workflows, as well as intuitive software that allows protocols to be adapted to specific needs without complex optimization.<\/p>\n

Who is QIAmini designed for?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Laura:<\/strong> QIAmini is particularly well suited for laboratories looking to move from manual workflows to automation without a major investment. It also works very well alongside larger automation systems when a fast and flexible solution is needed for smaller sample numbers or individual projects.<\/p>\n

Where can researchers see QIAmini?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lotta:<\/strong> QIAmini will first travel through the City-Lab QIAGEN exhibition series. After the tour, the instrument will remain available at City-Lab Biomedicum, where researchers can explore it at their own convenience.
